Top 6 Australian Natural Deodorants
Many people are looking for natural alternatives for deodorants as recent research links breast cancer with aluminum-based antiperspirants. If you are interested to know the details of the dangers of using aluminum-based deodorants, please read my blog linked. The biggest difference between natural deodorants and the aluminum-based ones is that natural deodorants do not prevent you from sweating, so toxins will not build up in your body. Natural deodorants usually use baking soda to act as a natural deodorant agent to prevent odors and kill the bacteria before they build up under your armpits. Baking soda and clays can absorb moisture from your armpits and keep them dry. However there are a lot of baking soda free natural deodorants available, we will post another blof about bicarb free deodorants very soon. Today, I would like to recommend six natural deodorants my family has personally used and with which we are happy with the ingredients and their performance. All the natural deodorants I recommend today are all Australian Made!!! Go Aussie!
808 Dude ♥♥♥♥
Roll-on; $8.95/50g; Perfect for Teenage Boys
Brand Story: 808 Dude was created by frustrated Aussie mum Carolyn Palliardi who wanted to provide teenage boys a healthy natural alternative to their personal care needs.
Ingredients: Water (Aqua), Glycerin, Aloe Barbadensis (Aloe) Leaf Juice Organic, Heptyl Glucoside, Zinc Gluconate, Glyceryl Caprylate, Xanthan Gum, Sodium Dehydroxyacetate, Juniperus Virginiana (Cedarwood) Oil, Citrus Aurantium Bergamia (Bergamot) Fruit Oil Organic, Cupressus sempervirens (Cypress) Leaf/Stem Oil Organic, Citrus Aurantium Amara (Bitter Orange) Leaf/Twig Oil Organic, Citrus Reticulata (Mandarin) Oil Organic, Pelargonium Graveolens (Geranium) Oil Organic, Elettaria Cardamomum (Cardamom) Seed Oil Organic, Santalum Spicatum (Sandalwood) Oil Organic, Vanilla Planifolia CO2 Extract Organic, Citronellol,* Geraniol,* Linalool,* Limonene
Ingredients Review: Nothing to worry, all the ingredients are safe. However EWG (a non-profit, non-partisan organization dedicated to protecting human health and the environment; I use this website a lot to check how they rate the ingredients) listed Citronellol and Linalool as moderate risk ingredients and EWG’s main concern with these two ingredients is skin irritation. However, based on my search results: Citronellol is an all naturally occurring scent ingredient derived from plants like rose and lemongrasses. Linalool is derived from essential oils which are naturally produced by a variety of plants. Therefore, unless your boy has very very sensitive skin, you do not need to worry too much about Citronellol and Linalool. The great way to avoid skin irritation is to do a patch test on your hand before you use it under your armpits.
Comments: My husband has tried the deodorant, like most of the guys, when I was really excited to hear his comment, he just gave me one sentence: "Not bad, I like roll-on deodorants and it works."
For me, I like the smell of sandalwood oil. I think for teenage boys, it is just perfect, the price is attractive, it is easy to apply and does the job, the ingredients are natural and the colour and the bottle are nice. Their website and social media accounts are all about teenage boys, so if they use this deodorant, they would know it is for them, other than "ok, my mum bought me this…"
Noosa Basics ♥♥♥♥♥
Stick; $16.95/63g; Unisex; Vegan
Brand Story: Based at Noosa on the Sunshine Coast, Queensland, this small family run business is dedicated to making the cleanest natural and organic products which are nontoxic and good for you. They list the number of ingredients they used in the products, simple and straight forward!
Ingredients: Organic Fair trade Shea Butter, Organic Coconut Oil, Organic Arrowroot Powder, Baking Soda (Aluminium free), Australian Kaolin Clay and 100% Pure Essential oils
Ingredients Review: I really adore Noosa Basics’ deodorant; it has always been my favorite, because of the simplicity of their ingredients. Six natural ingredients, that’s all in the formula and your kids probably already learned about these ingredient in school (unlike some other skincare companies, you would not even be able to pronounce the name of some their ingredients). This is Another deodorant which uses baking soda, so take it easy, don’t apply too much, just one swipe - it is more than enough.
Comments: The price is fair, actually it is the cheapest deodorant stick I can find. We love watching My Kitchen Rules, the judges often say the simpler, the better. In this case, the rule applies to Noosa Basics’ deodorant. Nothing is more beautiful than knowing there are only six ingredients in it and they work perfectly. The deodorant lasts all day long and you won’t have stinky armpits anymore if you use the stick. This is the first natural deodorant I let my husband try, at the beginning he refused to embrace the change, so I had to hide all his toxic ones, after he applied once without any choice, he fell in love with it, now he is using his second deodorant stick. I am very proud! Nossa Basics offers deodorant paste as well, I found it is harder for men to like paste than women, maybe they just can not handle too much at the same time? And we are just awesome when it comes to multi-tasking! I have to say it again, remember one swipe- it is more than enough:)
Earths Purities Ladies & Earths Purities Men ♥♥♥♥
Brand Story: Vincent and Hailey from the Gold Coast created Earths Purities deodorants after trying so many natural deodorants and finding them non-effective. They also provide consumers with 100% compostable and recyclable paper packaging which contains no plastic! WOOHOO!
Ladies’ Deodorant’s Ingredients: Organic coconut oil, organic shea butter, organic arrowroot, organic beeswax, aluminium free bicarbonate soda, organic carnauba wax, diatomaceous earth, organic bentonite clay, lemon myrtle essential oil, tangerine essential oil, Peru balsam essential, lavender essential oil & vitamin E oil
Men’s Deodorant’s Ingredients: Organic coconut oil, organic shea butter, organic arrowroot, organic beeswax, aluminium free bicarbonate soda, organic carnauba wax, diatomaceous earth, organic bentonite clay, lemon myrtle essential oil, petit grain essential oil, bergamot essential oil, frankincense essential oil, lavender essential oil & vitamin E oil
Ingredients Review: All natural, nothing to be worried about. Be mindful when you buy natural deodorants that use baking soda as an active ingredient because too much baking soda can be a bit harsh to your armpits due to the high PH (especially if you have sensitive skin). When you use the paste or stick, just make sure you do not apply too much which most people will tend to do; Baking soda is still an amazing natural ingredient to prevent body odor, kill bacteria and neutralize the body to prevent excess sweating.
Comments: Their environmental packaging makes this brand outstanding. Earth Purities used to use the push-up stick but now they have changed the packaging, it is still the same recycled paper pack, so if you pursue a zero waste lifestyle, then this is the best deodorant for you. Earths Purities blend different essential oils into the deodorants for men and women, so the active ingredients are the same, but the scents of the two deodorants are different. It certainly works effectively for me, but my husband feels that it does not protect him from body odour long enough, so he needs to reapply after lunch break. So overall it is a deodorant that is suitable for people does not have really strong BO. They also have couple of roll on deodorants and also two bicarb free deodorants for sensitive armpits, you can find them here. I personally don'y like deodorant with wet roll ball, but you might want to give it a go.
Roll-On; $12.95/70ml; Vegan
Fragrance Free ♥♥♥
Brand Story: Certified organic manufacturer of skin, body hair care products, organic botanical herbal blends, and environmentally responsible household cleaning products. The company was founded in 1999 at Riddells Creek, Victoria.
Ingredients - fragrance free: Organic aloe vera juice, purified water, organic ethanol(non-denatured), sodium bicarbonate, xanthan gum, organic avocado oil, vitamin c, potassium sorbate, organic calendula extract, organic chamomile extract, lavender extract, rosehip extract, organic Australian bush powder of Kakadu plum, organic jojoba oil, organic olive leaf extract.
Ingredients - evening bliss: Organic Aloe Vera Juice, Purified Water, Organic Ethanol, Organic Ylang Ylang Essential Oil, Sodium Bicarbonate, Xanthan Gum, Organic Avocado Oil, Bitter Orange Extract, Organic Olive Leaf Extract, Organic Calendula Extract, Organic Chamomile Extract, Organic Lavender Extract, Rosehip Extract, Kakadu Plum Extract, Organic Jojoba Oil.
Ingredients - vanilla kiss: Organic Aloe Vera Juice, Purified Water, Organic Ethanol, Xanthan Gum, Organic Vanilla Oleoresin, Bitter Orange Extract, Organic Avocado Oil, Organic Olive Leaf Extract, Organic Calendula Extract, Organic Chamomile Extract, Organic Lavender Extract, Rosehip Extract, Kakadu Plum Extract, Organic Jojoba Oil.
Ingredients Review: Organic ethanol here is acting as an enhancer so it can be easily absorbed and it also balances pH level of the deodorant. Kakadu plum contains the highest Vitamin C on earth (from a single natural food source). I usually find this ingredient in some very expensive skincare products. Kakadu plum also has anti-oxidants and bioactives. Again, most of the Biologika natural deodorants use baking soda - except Vanila Kiss, but because of ethanol, it should be OK for sensitive skin, still do not apply too much. Essential oils in the evening bliss and vanilla kiss deodorants give inviting and pleasant scents. Other ingredients help nourish and soothe skin.
Comments: The price of this roll-on deodorant is fair, particularly for a certified organic deodorant and the only certified organic deodorant in this list. Biologika's fragrance free deodorant can be an easy alternative for your man or son who do not want to switch to a toxin-free deodorant. The roll-on deodorant usually does not last as long as a paste deodorant, so you might need to re-apply more often. The evening bliss deodorant contains a blend of essential oils that are calming and soothing helping you rest easier in the evening and through the night. For a bicarb free alternative the vanilla kiss is a beautiful smelling bicarb free alternative.
Paste; $18.0/70g; Unisex;Vegan
The Pink Jar - Urban ♥♥♥
The Green Jar - Wild ♥♥♥♥
The Yellow Jar - Mellow (baking soda free) ♥♥♥
Brand Story: An Aussie husband and wife team from Newcastle, NSW, started this brand because both of them suffer from skin problems. They only use 100% natural ingredients to handcraft high quality products. They first created the pink jar called Urban and recently they also developed the green jar called Wild,
Pink Jar - Urban Ingredients: Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter*, Manihot Esculenta (Tapioca) Root Starch, Sodium Bicarbonate, Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil*, Kaolin Clay, Isoamyl Laurate, Euphorbia Cerifera Cera (Candelilla) Wax, Triethyl Citrate, Zinc Oxide, Tocopherol (Vitamin E), Salvia Officinalis (Sage) Oil, Citrus Aurantium Dulcis (Orange) Peel Oil, Cedrus Atlantica Wood (Cedarwood Atlas) Oil, Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Oil, Cymbopogon Martini (Palmarosa) Oil, Rosa Damascena (Rose) Oil and Vanilla planifolia (Vanilla) Extract
Green Jar - Wild Ingredients: Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter*, Manihot Esculenta (Tapioca) Root Starch, Sodium Bicarbonate, Solum diatomeae (Diatomaceous Earth) clay, Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil*, Isoamyl Laurate, Triethyl Citrate, Euphorbia Cerifera Cera (Candelilla) Wax, Zinc Oxide, Tocopherol (Vitamin E), Eucalyptus Radiata (Eucalyptus) Leaf Oil, Cedrus Atlantica Wood (Cedarwood Atlas) Oil, Melaleuca Teretifolia (Honey Myrtle) Oil, Myroxylon Balsamum (Peru Balsam) Oil
Yellow Jar - Mellow Ingredients: Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter*, Manihot Esculenta (Tapioca) Root Starch, Magnesium Hydroxide, Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil*, Kaolin Clay, Euphorbia Cerifera Cera (Candelilla) Wax, Triethyl Citrate, Zinc Oxide (non-nano), Capryloyl Glycerin/Sebacic Acid Copolymer Diheptyl Succinate, Olea Europaea (Olive) Leaf Extract, Tocopherol (Vitamin E), Activated Charcoal Powder
Ingredients Review: the ingredients are clean and you have nothing to be concerned about. The BEAUTY of this deodorant is it mixes citric acid with ethyl alcohol to lower the balance of the PH - the other deodorants use baking soda which makes the PH too high, so sensitive skin can not handle it. So it is really a game-changer!
Pink and Green jar contain the same amount of baking soda, so if you have used the pink jar before and do not have skin irritation, you would be fine with this green jar as well. If you are sensitive to bicarb the yellow jar has much more mellow ingredients suitable for sensitive skin. It is free from bicarb and essential oils and uses magnesium, zinc and activated charcoal to help control body odor. The yellow jar is unscented with no added fragrance ingredients.
Comparing to the pink jar, the green one - Wild blended essential oils such as honey myrtle, peru balsa, cedarwood and eucalyptus, because their anti-bacterial properties can make Wild stronger and more powerful.
Comments: The paste looks thick; it is hard to scoop out and has some little lumps in the jar I have opened the used myself, I have checked with Aaron at Woohoo! about these little lumps. Apparently it is because of the nature of unrefined shea butter, it melts when the temperature is too high and it will reform and get hard again when the temperate drops, it does not mean the shea butter is off or the quality is not good, so you do not need to worry about it.
Once you rub it gently, the grains will melt and are absorbed quickly and won’t have that paste texture anymore - it becomes more like a cream. It is quiet pricey, but one 70g jar lasts about 4-5 months. It does an awesome job holding the whole day. I like the pink jar - Urban which comes in the pink tub , I doubt boys and men will like the colour though. lol Personally I think the green jar is definitely more suitable for boys and men, because of its manly scent and the colour of the jar. The yellow jar is a great option for either men or women with sensitive skin.
No Pong Natural Deodorant ♥♥♥♥
Brand Story: No Pong was born in Australia, created by Melanie and Chris - a husband and wife team. Melanie is a registered midwife and Chris works in marketing and advertising. Unlike a lot of other green beauty businesses, M and C just focus on making one thing happen - No Pong in your life! They believe that natural deodorant should be affordable and effective! With over 650 FIVE STAR reviews, I think they certainly achieved their goal!
Ingredients: Cocos Nucifera (Coconut Oil), Sodium Bicarbonate (Baking Soda), Corn Starch, Beeswax, and a proprietary blend of 100% pure, certified organic essential oils consisting of Orange Sweet, Vanilla, Lemongrass, Cedarwood Atlas, Bergamot, Lime, Frankincense, Ylang Ylang, and Geranium
Ingredients Review: The ingredients are 100% clean and natural. Baking soda is aluminium-free salt which keeps armpit bacteria in check. So Bicarb is the hero ingredient in No Pong. However baking soda is water soluble, that's why this deodorant paste also contains Coconut, beeswax and corn starch to absorb the sweat and make the paste stick to your skin. The blend of the essential oils gives the deodorant cream a nice citrus and vanilla scent. Overall the ingredients used in the product is simple and clean which I love, but it does contain baking soda which might be a problem for people with sensitive skin and it does contain beeswax, so not for Vegan.
Comments: First of all, it is so affordable, you only need to spend less than $6/months, it is a bargain! Secondly, the paste is smooth, easy to apply and spread, so you only need to apply a thin layer of this cream under your armpits. Does it last 24 hours?! YES and NO. Yes for people like me who does not have strong BO, No for people like my husband, no way, you will need to re-apply every 4-5 hours. So for people have strong BO it is less convenient as it is a paste and you have to apply it using our fingertips. The paste contains beeswax and baking soda, so if you are sensitive to baking soda, be mindful, you might get rash. It comes in a tin which is plastic free and recyclable and reusable - add less pressure on the environment.
Overall, No Pong is not as powerful as Noosa Basics but is much stronger than Biologika roll-on. So it's suitable for people who does not have very strong BO and are not sensitive to baking soda. PLUS It is the cheapest natural deodorant on the market.
No Pong has just launched their bicarb free natural deodorant. Great for people with sensitive skin and it is around $7/tin
Black Chicken Remedies ♥♥♥♥♥
Paste; $18.5/75g; Unisex; Vegan
Brand Story: Black Chicken Remedies was created by the founder Chey Birch who was concerned that many skincare products contain toxic chemical and synthetic fragrance. Therefore, she started her own brand in Sydney, incorporating ancient knowledge and 100% natural and non-toxic ingredients into her formulas. Black Chicken Remedies connects you and your precious body with the harmony underlying all living things.
Ingredients: Shea Butter*, Coconut oil*, Camellia Tea oil*, Sodium Bicarbonate, Arrowroot, Kaolin Clay, Vitamin E, Vegetable Glycerin* and essential oils of Peppermint*, Cajaput*, Mandarin*, Clove, Rose Geranium, Lime*, Lavender* and Cedarwood*.
Ingredients Review: Very clean natural ingredients, nothing to be worried about, again they use baking soda in the paste, so make sure you do not apply too much. Also, if you have extremely sensitive skin, remember to do a patch test first. Clove and peppermint oil give it a very refreshing smell, which I like.
Comments: Black Chicken Remedies’ paste is famous for its unique scent, strong but not disrupting or overpowering and eventually you will just love it. The paste is the smoothest deodorant paste I have ever used. Very easy to scoop out and spread under your armpits. However, if you want to avoid sticky fingertips or can not stand the smell of clove, you may need to pass on this amazing deodorant.
The Physic Garden
Paste; $14.95/60g; Vegan
Brand Story: The Physic Garden is a truly inspiring Australian brand. Physic Garden founder, Charelle, uses her knowledge as a qualified Naturopath and Herbalist to handmake her products right here in Melbourne. After struggling to find a good selection of medicinal plants locally she started growing my own medicinal herbs from seeds and fell in love with the process. This inspired her to share her knowledge and help people to reconnect to the healing properties of nature every day, in a very practical, useful way. From this came a range of natural skincare products, and The Physic Garden was born.
Both - Organic Shea Butter, Bi-Carb Soda, Organic Arrowroot Powder, Olive Oil Infused with Calendula, Candelilla Wax,
Revitalise Me - Lemon Myrtle, Rosemary & Tea Tree Essential Oils
Relax Me - Lavender & May Chang Essential Oils, Olive Oil infused with Chamomile
Ingredient Review: Full of safe and beautifully nourishing ingredients. No red flags or concerns. Bicarb is the key odour fighting ingredients which should not be applied too heavily, particularly for sensitive skin, a patch test is a good idea if you think the bicarb may irritate your skin.
Comments: These deodorants from The Physic Garden are beautifully scented and use effective bicarb based formulas to neutralise body odour. They are vegan friendly and contain only safe and natural ingredients. It comes in a small jar as a smooth paste. I have found the jar is not very convenient to apply from and it does not come with a scoop so you have to use your finger, that is the major drawback for me. The ingredients are blended exceptionally well however and feels very smooth. While smooth, the texture is very slightly grainy but it rubs into your skin well and doesn't feel stuck on top of it.
Hope you all can find the perfect natural deodorant for yourself and your loved ones!
If you have super sensitive skin and want to avoid any natural deodorant contains baking soda, don't feel that your options are limited, because there are so many baking soda free deodorant out there. Here is my blog listing top 8 bicarb free natural deodorants.
