Natural Shampoo & Conditioner

Toxins

Most shampoos use harsh toxic surfactants such as Sodium Laureth Sulfate (SLS) and various PEGS which have significant toxicity concerns. Both Shampoos and conditioners use synthetic fragrances and preservatives (many of which are formaldehyde releasing and hormone disrupting). Cosmetic colourants and synthetic chemical UV filters are other concerning toxins commonly used in colour shampoos.

Shampoo and Conditioner

Natural shampoos and conditioners walk the line between providing an effective clean and using safer but milder surfactants. I have found that they balance this well, effectively cleaning hair without the use of harsher toxic surfactants.

Instead of using synthetic fragrances they use natural fragrance ingredients and essential oils. Non-toxic preservatives are used instead of highly toxic synthetic preservatives. While they are not as effective they still manage to give a reasonable shelf life.  Natural plant proteins and amino acids are used to effectively nourish and style hair.

Dry Shampoo

Dry shampoos work by using alcohol or absorbent powders such as starch to absorb excess oil, keeping your hair looking fresh between washes. It is important to note that dry shampoos do not actually clean hair. They are a freshening and styling tool.

Denatured alcohol, propellants, synthetic fragrances and talc commonly used in dry shampoos. They are all highly toxic and can severely damage hair, particularly if overused.

Natural dry shampoos use various starch powders to absorb excess oil. They are alcohol free, not aerosolized to avoid using propellants and are free from other toxic ingredients. They keep it simple while also reaming highly effective.  Acure and Tints of Nature are our go to options for dry shampoos.

Leave in Conditioner

Leave in conditioner is a great way to nourish and hydrate hair, reducing frizz and making styling easier. Acure, Andalou and Dr Bronner all have great natural leave in conditioners that your hair will love.

Acure’s is a floral smelling vegan spray with a hint of herbal rosemary. Andalou’s is a rich fruity buttery smelling vegan cream. Dr Bronner’s is a certified organic cream that has a light coconut and lavender smell.
